Frequently Asked Questions About the 1-Day Humantay Lake Tour (FAQ)

What is the altitude and climate of Humantay Lake?

The lake is located at approximately 4,200 – 4,300 meters (13,780 – 14,100 feet) above sea level. During the day, especially in the dry season, the sun is intense, and temperatures can reach 15-20°C (59-68°F) at midday. It is recommended to dress in layers: warm clothing in the morning (jacket, gloves, hat/beanie) and lighter clothing for the hike as your body warms up.

How difficult is the hike? Do I need to be in good shape?

The hike to Humantay Lake is considered moderate to challenging, mainly due to the high altitude. The uphill section from Soraypampa takes around 1.5 to 2 hours on a steep trail with loose rocks. Although the distance is not long (approx. 3 km one way), the lack of oxygen above 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) makes the effort much greater. A basic level of fitness or prior hiking experience is recommended. The guide carries emergency oxygen in case anyone experiences severe altitude sickness symptoms.

    Is the tour safe?

Yes, the trail to Humantay Lake is well-traveled by tourists and clearly marked. However, as it is a mountain hike, there are steep sections where you should walk carefully to avoid slipping. Hundreds of people complete this trek daily without any issues.

Can children or older adults go on the tour?

The tour is mainly designed for adults and young travelers, but children over 6 years old can participate under the responsibility of their parents. For young children (6-10 years old), renting a horse for the ascent is recommended to prevent exhaustion. However, altitude and cold temperatures can affect young travelers, so ensure they are warmly dressed, well-hydrated, and monitored for any discomfort. It is not recommended to bring babies or very young children due to the extreme altitude and demanding hike.
For older adults, participation depends on their physical condition. Those in good health and accustomed to hiking can complete the tour, but caution is advised.

Can you swim in the lake?

No. Swimming or bathing in Humantay Lake is strictly prohibited. Aside from the freezing glacial waters, local authorities protect the fragile ecosystem and preserve the water source for nearby communities. Additionally, human contact could alter the lake’s natural turquoise color.

What should I bring for the tour?

It is essential to bring: Comfortable hiking clothes, trekking shoes or boots with good grip, a warm jacket, gloves, and a hat for the cold morning, a change of lighter clothing for when you warm up, a rain poncho or waterproof jacket, sunglasses, a cap/hat for the sun, and high-SPF sunscreen – UV radiation at high altitude is extremely strong

    Travel Tips and Recommendations

    • Appropriate Clothing: Dress in layers. In the early morning, you’ll need thermal clothing, fleece, a windproof jacket, and even a scarf and gloves. During the hike, especially on the ascent, your body will warm up quickly, so wear a breathable t-shirt and a lightweight second layer underneath for comfort. Always pack a waterproof jacket or poncho, as Andean weather is unpredictable. A sun hat and UV-protection sunglasses are just as essential.
    • Proper Footwear: Wear trekking shoes or sports boots with non-slip soles, and make sure they are already broken in (do not wear brand-new shoes on the hike). The trail has loose rocks and can become slippery when it rains, so good grip is crucial. During the rainy season, it is also recommended to wear gaiters or waterproof boots, as the path may become muddy.
    • Horse Rental: If you think you might struggle to reach the lake, consider renting a horse in Soraypampa. Local muleteers offer this service for 100 soles (approx. $30 USD), allowing a horse to carry you for most of the ascent. Negotiate the price before starting. Keep in mind that the horse stops a few meters before the lake, so the final stretch must be completed on foot. Even if you use a horse, wear warm clothing, as you will be sitting still and may feel colder during the ascent.
