Travel to Machupicchu in a cheap way

  • Description

    DAY 1: CUSCO – HIDROELECTRICA - AGUAS CALIENTES

    The hotel pick-up is between 7.30am to 8.00am, then, we start the trip to Hydroelectric power plant. We will follow the journey through a sinuous (undulating) ascent course to the Abra Málaga (4316masl). From where we will be able to see the wonder geography. After a short stop, we will begin the descent into the jungle, passing through the different altitudinal levels that show paradisiacal landscapes: from majestic snow-capped mountains to the hot jungle. Arriving at Alfamayo, we will find a path in perfect conditions and we will have our lunch. Once we finish our lunch, we will continue along a dirt road (unpaved) to the town of Santa Maria (1575msnm), and near this, we will arrive at the town of Santa Teresa,

    At 3:45 p.m. Finally, we arrive at Hydroelectric, where our guide will give us the necessary instructions so we can make the trek to Aguas Calientes. After receiving our instructions, we will walk approximately 2 hours to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town), and we will arrive at 5:30 pm and we will meet our guide.

    Later, we will arrive to our basic lodging, you can leave your things and take a bath. Then you will have a Dinner with the group (at this moment our guide gives you the instructions for the next day). We will return to the lodge and finish our first day.

    DAY 2: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU – HIDROELECTRICA - CUSCO

    Breakfast will be served from 4.30 am in the accommodation; Then we will have the option of being able to go up to Machupicchu by tourist bus (with an additional charge, 20min) or on foot (1h30min trek up hill). The guided visit to Machupicchu will start from 6am and will last 2 hours, after which, you will have free time until 11:00 am for visiting it by yourselves.

    Then at 12.35pm we will board the train from the hot waters to the hydroelectric, where we will transfer you to the vehicles to continue the return to Santa Teresa. Here, you will have free time of 1 hour approximately for lunch or use bathroom (Lunch not included), later, we will continue the return to Cusco by the same route arriving at 9:30 pm. at the Plaza de Armas. End of services

      • If you are in good condition, we recommend not to take the train that takes you from the HYDROELECTRIC to Aguas Calientes (takes 20min by train)
    • Entrance tickets to Waynapicchu (optional, extra charge of $ 30USD).
      • There are only 400 tickets per day to climb Huayna Picchu (divided into 2 groups: one at 7am and another at 10am, is recommendable the 10am because there are more chances the sky is clear. In high season we recommend buy in advance with several weeks in ahead.
    • Entrance tickets to hot springs (optional, with additional charge of $8USD)
    • Lunch of the second day (from $5USD in a small town called Santa Teresa)

  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    Information about the Guide:

    • Transportation from Cusco to the HYDROELECTRIC is not with a guide on board, however, the driver will give you the indications for your lunch and will take you to HYDROELECTRIC.
    • The guide waits for you at the HYDROELECTRIC to agree the meeting point in Aguas Calientes. As well, he will give you options for you to be able to go by train (optional) from HYDROELECTRIC to Aguas Calientes
    • The guide service is in Machupicchu; the second day at averaging 6am.

    Travel times

    • From Cusco to Hydroelectric: 7 h average
      • It is a long journey, it takes about 6-7 hours to reach HYDROELECTRIC and there are stretches where the road is pretty bad.
    • From Hydroelectric to Aguas calientes: 2h
    • Walking time from Aguas calientes to Machupicchu (uphill): 2h30min around
    • Guided visit to Machupicchu:2h

      Recommendations  

    • Dressing in layers and take a raincoat
    • Take enough water and some snacks.
    • Take the necessary, you will need to walk a lot (if you have a big backpack, it can be left in your accommodation in Cuzco), we recommend you a maximum 10kg
    • Of course wear mountain footwear (trekking shoes)
    • During the journey from the Hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes wear light clothes with long sleeves
    • It is important that you bring the best mosquito repellent, as they abound in the area, if you do not want to get stung, you must bring a reliable repellent.
    • Wear sun protection and sunglasses
    • Bottled water of 1l per person (minimum)
    • Agua embotellada de 1l por persona (mínimo)
    • Take a lantern if you decide to go up from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu without using the tourist bus.
    • Carry camera (with extra battery)
    • Bring bathing suit and towel for the hot springs (if you decide to go to the hot springs)
    • Bring several socks and a towel.
